John’s only gun expertise prior to today was going to a pistol range and shooting 25 yard’s. I promised him early this summer time I would take him to go shoot little caliber, low recoil rifles but the issue was I could never ever squeeze in the time. Lastly, this past week I had 1 day to go shoot. I coached him more than lunch and all the way out to the house about gun security, breathing tactics, aiming methods, slow trigger pull, and watching the grass for wind, and so forth… He shot a quarter size group at 50 yards (no kidding). Now watch what he does to ten” balloons with 20ish mph wind with a .17 HMR bullet. On a side note it was enjoyable watching a very first time shooter get on their target and appreciate the great outdoors. I am convinced the .17 is a fantastic first time shooters rifle. John usually commented “I adore seeing the targets blow up by way of the scope.” Savage .17 HMR BSA 4x16x40 Scope CCI .20 gr. FMJ

Question by 17hunter: Who makes a much better Weaver scope mount?
I have a Remington 597 .17 hmr. It has a groove on the receiver, which I am presently using given that the Simmons Weaver base I am using will not tighten down. I don’t believe Loc Tite on the screw will function till the screws can be snugged down.
The screws will screw into the holes tightly by themselves, but they will not snug up with the Weaver base produced by Simmons. Possibly the screws that came with the base are just a little also brief. any suggestion?

The Tip Off groove on your rifles receiver will operate, but then you have to make certain whatever rings you use clamp pretty tightly into that groove so they do not move and throw off your scope.
As a Gunsmith I would suggest you replace your scope base with an actual “Weaver Base” produced by Weaver and not the Simmons “Copy” of the Weaver you have now. Simmons scope base screws are shorter in length (You have currently picked up on that) and the Weaver Base and screws are perfect length for your Remington 597. You can get an “Original” Weaver Base from the below listed web site for about $ 7
Bear in mind, Tip Off Scope bases were developed originally for 22 caliber rifles and weren’t truly created as a solid base for a .17HMR Rifle….

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful This is a great scope for the 17 Rifle, April 18, 2011 By Bill – Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: BSA 6-18X40 Sweet 17 Rifle Scope with Side Parallax Adjustment and Multi-Grain Turret (Sports) I usually do not write reviews but this scope is so good that I feel I must. This scope is extremely accurate on my 17 caliber Savage Rifle. I am 65 years old and my sight is not as good as it once was. Some times it is hard to see varmints 100 yards away in shadowy places, however the scope brings them in clear and bright. I use a a bipod to help steady the rifle. Once the cross hairs are on the target it is a sure shot. The only negative I noticed is that you can not turn the power all the way to the stops at 6X or 18X. Once you hit the stops at you have to turn the nob back ever so slightly or the image will be blurred a little. Not enough of a problem to worry about.Bill Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment

This review is from: BSA 6-18X40 Sweet 17 Rifle Scope with Side Parallax Adjustment and Multi-Grain Turret (Sports) Bought the Bsa 6-18 Sweet 17 for my new CZ 452. Less then 8 shots,no bore sight, had it covering a quarter.A little fine tunning, my last 3 shots were touching at 100 yards. Set zero at 100 turned it up to 200 yards, hit 2″ target. I think I am going like this scope. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? | Comment
